Catholic Charities West Virginia to Host Special Film Screening

Documentary Discusses Affects of Poverty on Childhood Development

WHEELING, W.Va. – Catholic Charities West Virginia (CCWVa) will be hosting a special screening of the new film “The First 1000 Days: Investing in WV Children Where It Counts” March 26 at 7 p.m. at the CCWVa administrative building, located at 2000 Main Street, Wheeling, W.Va. The documentary explores how poverty in a child’s early life affects long-term development, and how these challenges are molding the future of the state. A panel discussion will follow the viewing.

The event will be free, and CCWVa invites parents, social service providers, elected officials, and all those interested in early childhood development to attend and take part in this vital discussion.

West Virginia Public Broadcasting and award-winning producer John Nakashima created the film. In addition to examining the struggles of West Virginia families, the documentary also looks at some of the best resources offered in the state, including In-Home Family Education, Early Head Start, and Head Start.

The film was sponsored in part by CCWVa. Mark Sliter-Hays, executive director of CCWVa, said, “As a leader in providing services to children and their families through our Birth to Three, Child Care Resource Center, and Child and Adult Care Food Program, Catholic Charities West Virginia is invested in ensuring that children and families are receiving resources, information and necessary specialized care that strengthens the family and supports their well-being.”

A panel discussion will be held after the special viewing. The panel will include Wendy Miller, director of CCWVa Birth to Three – RAU 1; Dr. Judith Romano, director of Wheeling Hospital’s Center for Pediatrics; Marlene Midget, executive director of Northern Panhandle Head Start/Early Head Start; and Jim Miller and Lacey Miller, parents of Addyson Miller. The event is WV STARS approved.
