Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center Expands to Provide Quality Service

WHEELING, W.Va. – Catholic Charities West Virginia (CCWVa) is working to reduce poverty in West Virginia with a more connected approach in programs and services in 2015.

Recent expansions at the Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center (CCNC) are a part of this holistic focus on maximizing the organization’s service offerings.

“After a careful evaluation of our programs and staffing needs, we decided to add a new outreach worker who would be responsible for helping with the implementation of the Neighborhood Center’s programs, especially the meal delivery program,” said CCWVa Northern Regional Director Elizabeth Paulhus.

The meal delivery program currently provides meals six days a week to more than 250 homebound individuals in Wheeling.

In January, Susan Newman was hired for the new outreach worker position. Newman had previously served as an AmeriCorps member with CCWVa. In addition to managing the meal delivery program, Newman will also be working to strengthen existing programs, such as the food pantry and utility assistance, and to develop new programming to address gaps in services.

Newman joins the center’s strong team that includes two assistant directors, Pam Campbell and Diana Bell, who handle the day-to-day operations of the center. Campbell is the assistant director of operations, and Bell works as the assistant director of programming.

As Northern Regional director for CCWVa, Paulhus oversees the administration and management of all staff and programs in Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, and Marshall counties. She is actively involved in the Neighborhood Center and is working with staff, volunteers, the Advisory Council, and CCWVa leadership to continue developing the work that the center does.

“This is an exciting time of growth and expansion at the Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center,” said Paulhus. “All of the changes and investments being made at the Neighborhood Center right now have one purpose at their core: to better serve our clients.”

“We have numerous programs that aim to reduce poverty through a variety of proven methods,” said Patti Phillips, director of Development and Marketing at CCWVa. “We continue to look at the local implementation of programs and services, program similarities and best practices in program management in order to maximize funding and provide the greatest impact for our clients.”

The Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center is CCWVa’s largest outreach center and has been providing comprehensive community social services in Wheeling for more than 45 years. The Neighborhood Center has succeeded with the support of the community, dedicated volunteers, and generous donors.

CCWVa is open to all people regardless of their race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, or marital or family status.
