A Catholic Charities West Virginia volunteer’s reflection on her service to and encounter with a migrant family
“I am a first time volunteer ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher and have only just begun working with my first clients – a Burmese couple who have two young children. Even though we have just scratched the surface and each have much to learn, we have already connected as humans sharing this gift called ‘life.’ My fears of inadequacy are waylaid when I realize that simply sharing a smile, a cup of tea, and other common experiences are just as important as the ABCs. The ‘lighbulbs’ of understanding are rewards that I treasure with each visit.”
